Voiceover
Turn text into a spoken voiceover with ElevenLabs, fal.ai or OpenRouter on your own account, and place it on the timeline.
Voiceover turns written text into speech and puts it on the timeline as its own audio clip. Use it to narrate a screen recording you made in silence, to add a spoken line, or to replace a sentence you would rather not re-record.
Before you start
- You need an account with one of three providers, added in Settings › AI › Providers: ElevenLabs, fal.ai or OpenRouter. See Connect an AI account.
- The provider charges you directly. Cutscript shows the estimate under the button and sends nothing until you press Generate voiceover.
- It needs an internet connection.
Make a voiceover
- Open Media in the right rail (
⌘ 1), choose the Generate tab, then Voiceover ("Speak your script with a voice you choose"). - Pick the Voice provider: ElevenLabs, fal.ai or OpenRouter. It starts on the default from Settings › AI › Voiceover, and a choice here applies to this voiceover only. If the provider has no key yet, a button offers to connect it.
- Choose the voice and the speech model.
- ElevenLabs lists your account's own voices, including cloned ones. Search them, press Load more voices for more, and press Refresh voices & models after you change something in your account.
- fal.ai and OpenRouter list their speech models with a price and a Recommended badge. Each model has preset voices.
- Type or paste your narration into Text to speak. A counter shows how many characters you have used and the limit. For ElevenLabs the limit is at most 40,000, and it can be lower for a given model.
- Leave Add to timeline on to place it for you.
- Press Generate voiceover. Cancel generation stops it.
The cost line says what it will use. For ElevenLabs it reads "Uses your ElevenLabs credits" with the character count. For the others it gives an estimate and who charges it, for example "charged by fal.ai".
The audio lands on a separate track at the playhead, and your original audio is not touched. Every voiceover you make is listed under the form and in Media › Saved › Voices.
Voice a passage you already wrote
- Select the words in the script that you want to replace or narrate.
- Right-click and open Add audio.
- Choose Add voiceover for this part….
The panel opens with the selected words as the text, and the voiceover is placed at that part. A voiceover keeps its natural length, so it will not stretch to fit the selection.
What each provider can and cannot do
| Provider | Good to know |
|---|---|
| ElevenLabs | Your own and cloned voices, in 29 to 90+ languages depending on the model. Billed in your ElevenLabs credits. |
| fal.ai | ElevenLabs, Gemini, xAI and Inworld voices, billed by fal.ai. Preset voices only. Your own ElevenLabs voices need your ElevenLabs key. |
| OpenRouter | Each model's preset voices. No voice cloning in Cutscript, and no word timings, because OpenRouter sends the audio only. |
Tips
- Write the way you speak. Short sentences read better aloud than long ones.
- Generate a short test first. It costs less, and you hear the voice before you commit a whole script.
- A voiceover is an ordinary audio clip, so you can move it, trim it and set its volume on the timeline.
