Record sound from one app

Record the sound of only the apps you pick, such as a call or a music player, instead of everything your Mac plays. Experimental.

Updated 3 min read

By default Cutscript records everything your Mac plays. Choose apps narrows that to the apps you pick, so a chat notification or a podcast in the background never reaches your video. Your microphone is a separate track and is not affected.

Note: Choosing apps is experimental. Cutscript hides it until you switch it on, and it has had less testing than recording all system sound.

Before you start

  • Switch on Experimental recording modes in Settings › Recording. This adds Choose apps to the Sound picker. It also adds Device mode: see Record an iPhone or iPad.
  • Recording needs the same permissions as any screen recording. See Record your screen.
  • Choose Display, Window or Area as usual. Device recordings use a Record device sound switch instead.

Choose the apps

  1. Open the recorder with ⇧ ⌘ R.
  2. Press the sound picker in the bar. It reads Sound from all apps until you change it.
  3. Under System sound, press Choose apps. The three options are All apps, Choose apps and None.
  4. Tick the apps whose sound you want. Type in Search apps to find one. Apps that are playing sound right now show a small animated bars mark and are listed first. The rest follow in alphabetical order.
  5. Tick Show background apps if the app you want is missing. By default the list shows only regular apps.
  6. Check the bar. It reads Sound from 1 app or Sound from 3 apps, and hovering shows the names. If you have chosen none, it reads No system sound with the hint "Pick at least one app".
  7. Press Start recording.

The list shows apps that are running. Start the apps you need before you press start: an app you open after the recording begins is not recorded.

The three options

OptionWhat is recorded
All appsEverything your Mac plays. This is the default.
Choose appsOnly the apps you ticked.
NoneNo system sound. Your microphone is still recorded if it is on.

All apps and None are always available. They are the same as the System audio switch in Settings › Recording: off means None.

Tip: If a browser is silent, choose All apps. Some browsers play sound through helper processes, which can leave a chosen browser looking silent.

If something does not record

  • If none of the apps you chose is running when the recording starts, the bar warns that system audio is not being recorded, and the take carries on without it.
  • If capturing the chosen apps' sound fails during the take, the take carries on without it and the bar shows a warning.

After the recording

The chosen apps' sound is saved as the take's system sound track, separate from your microphone. Project in the right rail lists it, and the Clip panel has its level and a mute switch. Muting hides it without deleting it, so you can bring it back.
