File formats and where files live
Which files Cutscript imports and exports, and which folders it keeps your projects, recordings and settings in.
This page lists the file types Cutscript works with and the folders it writes to, so you know what to back up, move or delete.
Where Cutscript keeps things
Most of it lives in one folder, the app data folder: ~/Library/Application Support/Cutscript. Settings › About shows the exact path under App data folder, with Copy and Show in Finder buttons.
| What | Where | Can you move it? |
|---|---|---|
| Projects | projects inside the app data folder, one folder per project | Yes. Settings › Storage › Change folder… |
| Recordings (takes while they record) | recordings inside the app data folder | Yes. Settings › Recording › Recordings folder › Change folder… |
| Videos from links | Cutscript Downloads in your Movies folder | Yes. Settings › Tools › Download folder › Change… |
| Exports | Wherever you choose in the save dialog | You choose each time. |
| Settings | settings.json | No. |
| Saved API keys | secrets.json, each key encrypted with the system keychain | No. |
| Model lists | model-catalog.json, a cache | No. |
Beside those, the app data folder holds folders for your media library (media-library), generated music, sound effects and voices (audio-library), brand kits (brand-kits), saved graphics (graphics-library), the director's skills and chats (director-skills, director-threads), and the link downloader's programs (tools).
Warning: Do not edit or delete files inside the app data folder while Cutscript is open. To move your projects, use Settings › Storage, which copies them safely.
Inside a project folder
Each project is a folder with a few parts:
project.jsonis the edit itself: cuts, transcript, graphics, captions and settings.assetsholds generated audio, graphics assets and, for a recording, arecording-<id>folder with the screen video, the microphone and camera tracks and the cursor data.cacheholds waveforms, thumbnails, posters and temporary files. These are disposable.checkpointsholds the restore points that AI chat messages and the director create.
Media you import stays where it is on disk. The project points to it. If you move or delete the original, the project shows a missing-file card in the preview with Locate… on it. Click it to open the Relink media dialog and choose where each file is now. Your edits stay as they are.
When you choose Move to Trash on a project in the home screen, it goes to the macOS Trash, where you can restore it.
Move a project to another Mac
Use a project package. It is one file, <Project name>.csproj, that holds the whole project.
- Choose File › Export Project Package…. You can also click Export project package… in the Export panel, or use the project's menu on the home screen.
- Choose what travels with it: Include all media, Include media, smaller copies or Leave media out. Two switches add Include AI chats and checkpoints and Include brand kit.
- Click Export… and choose where to save it.
On the other Mac, choose File › Import Project Package…, double-click the file, or drop it on the home screen. It opens as a new project and changes nothing you already have. If you left the media out, use Locate… to relink it.
A .csproj file is a ZIP with a manifest, so Cutscript can tell it from a Visual Studio C# project, which shares the extension. A Visual Studio file gets "This .csproj is a Visual Studio C# project, not a Cutscript project." A package from a newer Cutscript asks you to update.
What Cutscript imports
| Kind | Extensions |
|---|---|
| Video | mp4, mov, m4v, webm, mkv, avi, mts, mpg, mpeg |
| Audio | m4a, mp3, wav, wave, aif, aiff, flac, ogg, oga, opus, aac, caf |
| Images | png, jpg, jpeg, gif, webp, heic, heif, svg |
The extension is only a claim. Cutscript still reads the file, so a .webm with no picture is treated as audio, and a file with no audio or video gets "This file has no audio or video streams."
Files you give to the AI are different. On the home screen and in the AI chat, Attach also takes pictures (png, jpg, jpeg, webp, gif), svg, tables (csv, tsv, xlsx, json) and documents (pdf, docx, txt, md). The AI reads up to eight at a time.
What Cutscript exports
Click Export in the editor's top bar. The tabs and their formats:
| Tab | Formats |
|---|---|
| Video | MP4 H.264 (the default), MP4 HEVC, MOV ProRes, WebM VP9. Set the resolution, frame rate, quality and encoder, and choose whether to burn in captions and normalize volume. |
| Audio | WAV (the default), AAC (.m4a), MP3, FLAC |
| Timeline | Final Cut Pro X (.fcpxml), Premiere (.xml), DaVinci Resolve (.xml), Samplitude/Reaper (.edl) |
| Transcript | Plain text (the default), Markdown, HTML, Word (.docx), Rich Text |
| Subtitles | SubRip (.srt, the default), WebVTT (.vtt) |
Exported video has no alpha channel, so transparent graphics are flattened into the picture. See Export a video.
